Shurei discende da una rispettabile famiglia nobiliare, che però non naviga in buone acque ed è costretta ad una vita di ristrettezze. Per dare una svolta alla situazione Shurei accetta di diventare la concubina del nuovo imperatore Ryuki allo scopo di educarlo. Ryuki infatti sembra totalmente disinteressato alla vita di corte e non si adopera affatto per partecipare attivamente al governo del paese. Insieme a Shurei viene accettato a palazzo anche Seiran, come capitano delle guardie e guardia del corpo dell'imperatore. Seiran è ha un passato misterioso ed è stato adottato tempo prima dalla famiglia di Shurei. Ben presto Shurei si ritrova al centro degli intrighi della corte imperiale, nel non facile compito di badare al capriccioso Ryuki. Un Ryuki che però sembra nascondere diversi eventi dolorosi nel suo passato.
