In 1948 roept David Ben Goerion de onafhankelijke staat Israël uit. Al in 1919 hebben de Britten de Joden een 'nationaal huis' in Palestina beloofd. Als dit plan aan de vooravond van WOII in het water dreigt te vallen, nemen Joodse milities de wapens op. De hoop op een vreedzaam samenleven tussen Joden en Palestijnen is dan al zo goed als bekeken. En daarna verslechteren de verhoudingen alleen maar verder. De trauma's van de holocaust, de verdrijving van Palestijnse families (Al Nakba, de catastrofe, zoals 1948 wordt aangeduid in de Arabische wereld); telkens komt er een schepje bij de frustraties en de spiraal van geweld. Met bijzonder filmarchiefmateriaal, ooggetuigen en historicus Eugene Rogan.
