共军飘忽不定的行踪给了国军很大麻烦，蒋介石知道共军此举会造成他们居无定所，心无所依，便下令加大对共军的追堵，好给他们施加更大压力。而共军目前的情况也确如蒋介石所料，在艰难的行军过程中，已有三成的士兵不堪忍受漫无目的的跋涉，离开了队伍。彭德怀的下属建议他向党中央提意见，彭德怀却表示自己服从党中央的命令。一军团的军团长林彪又接到了上方连夜急行军的命令，他们要连夜翻过眼前的那座险峻的山，由于伤兵众多，此任务实在艰巨。一军团的一位连长因为受伤过重无法靠自己前进，为了不连累同志，饮弹自尽了，这让林彪决定了要让彭德怀当红军指挥的想法。随后，林彪打电话告知彭德怀想让他当三军的指挥，却遭彭德怀拒绝，林彪很不甘心，便写信给了党中央，道明了自己的想法。
