毛泽东收到前线的捷报后，高兴万分。在同周恩来商讨后，毛泽东决定向外界公布这次中国志愿军的统帅。而美军将领麦克阿瑟在得知中国志愿军统帅究竟是谁时，很不屑一顾，他觉得中国的统帅只有一个，那就是成吉思汗。中国志愿军这次入朝作战的条件艰苦异常。在作战过程中，有一个连的战士被生生冻死在阵地上，而他们冻死时还保持着冲锋的姿势。除此之外，多日没能吃上一口热饭的战士们更是无数。前线战地记者将战士们在朝鲜的经历都写在了新闻里，传递给国内的群众，其中刊登在人民日报的《谁是最可爱的人》感动了千千万万人，很多人都纷纷决定要给志愿军写信，并寄去了许多慰问品。
