手下的战士们发电报向彭德怀反映粮食并没有送到位，彭德怀就此事大发雷霆，质问后勤副司令洪学智，而洪学智则保证他已经派人将粮食送到位。彭德怀查清粮食的事后，得知这是手下的战士们为获得更多的粮食而谎报消息，忙对洪学智道歉，洪学智自然原谅。彭德怀收到了来自国内一位东北农民的一封信，那位农民道明自己唯一的儿子宋老根暗自参了军，他想请彭德怀将他儿子劝回家。宋老根便是连队中的宋卫国，但宋卫国并不想回家。在随后的一次作战中，宋卫国和美方的一名战士一同摔下了悬崖。宋卫国并没有牺牲，他被一朝鲜少女贞玉所救。由于伤势过重，他只能暂时留在她家养伤。这场由美军发起的绞杀战前后持续了四个多月。
